A Gantry Robot is an automated industrial system that can also be referred to as Cartesian Robot or a Linear Robot. Gantry robots move in linear paths creating a three dimensional cubic envelope of space it can work within. For this reason, the term Cartesian robot is ideal since the overall top-down working space is bound by two linear paths that intersect at right angles to create the working plane (typically referred to as X and Y.) When you add a third axis (typically referred to as Z), this creates the depth at which the manipulation equipment can operate inside the cubical envelope. While these three axes are the principal forms of movement, gantry robots can contain many other axes of manipulationIn rarer cases, gantry robots are referred to as Smart Cranes since they resemble industrial overhead cranes. While gantry robots are not defined as cranes, they do share visual similarities and core concepts. Overhead cranes are manually operated so the term “smart” applies to gantry robots being fully autonomous without need for operator input. In being autonomous, the biggest difference is gantry robots operate independently of human beings in their workcell while overhead cranes can exist in areas populated with workers.

Frame: The structural frame provides sturdiness and strength to the overall pick and place robotic mechanism. It’s generally made from steel or aluminum.

Home Position Sensors:  Fully adjustable sensors help to correct the movement on the payload or the overhead horizontal line. This leads to the precision and accuracy delivered by the Gantry overhead.

Linear Motion Modules: They are the crucial components of this whole system that help to drive the motion of the Gantry along a single axis. Without these driving modules, the Gantry robots wouldn’t even work.

Gear Reducers: They help to facilitate the motion from servos and reduce any momentary inertia that’s caused or left behind.

Servo Motor Systems: These motor systems are responsible for closing the loop of the whole mechanism from the controller to the endpoint. It helps to convert the signals and let the motion driver know that the motion has been carried out as planned.
